Start with the right kind of roof area
A horizontal footprint and a sloped roof measurement are different. This tool converts a rectangular horizontal plan into sloped area using one pitch. Include measured overhangs in the plan dimensions. Complex roofs need separate planes and a more detailed takeoff.
A 30-by-40 plan at a 4/12 pitch
The horizontal area is 1,200 square feet. The pitch multiplier is √(1 + (4 ÷ 12)²), approximately 1.0541, giving 1,264.91 square feet of sloped area. With 10% extra, the material area is 1,391.40 square feet, or 13.914 roofing squares. At three bundles per square, round 41.742 up to 42 bundles.
What does “2,000 square feet” mean?

Applying pitch to a measurement already taken on the roof slope counts the slope twice. Confirm how a supplied measurement was obtained before using it.
The field-shingle count is not the whole roof order
Starter, hip and ridge products, underlayment, ice barrier where required, flashing, ventilation, fasteners and replacement decking require separate quantities. The waste percentage here applies to field area; it does not calculate those accessories.
Check the actual product's bundle coverage and installation instructions. The three-bundle assumption here is for the selected shingle, not every roofing material. Request an itemized supplier or contractor takeoff for a roof with valleys, dormers or mixed pitches.
