Estimate compound for the finishing scope
This tool estimates ready-mixed compound from panel area. It is a planning quantity for the selected product, not a detailed joint-length takeoff. Full-surface skim coating, repairs, texture and different finish levels can require a different allowance.
A 12-by-12 room including its ceiling
Using 8-foot walls, a 20-square-foot door and a 15-square-foot window, the net panel area is 493 square feet. At one gallon per 100 square feet, the All Purpose estimate is 4.93 gallons. Adding 10% gives 5.423 gallons. At 4.5 gallons per pail, both figures round up to two pails.
Package rounding can hide a rate difference
The lightweight option currently uses a simplified planning rate of 0.9 gallon per 100 square feet. That gives 4.437 gallons for this room, or 4.881 with 10% extra. The latter also rounds to two pails. Check the manufacturer's current coverage for the exact product; a rounded pail count does not make two products interchangeable.
Keep these purchases separate
- Panel sheets and suitable fasteners.
- Joint tape and corner treatment.
- Compound for the specified finish.
- Sanding and dust-control supplies, primer and paint.
A pail's price must match its actual volume. Enter a local quote for the selected size; an empty price is an unpriced item rather than a free material. Store and use compound according to its label, and include delivery when the order is too heavy or bulky to collect conveniently.
